Glutamine has been the center of several systemic reviews in the last few years that have referenced (IS THIS WHAT YOU MEAN?) more than 60 scientific studies. There is substantial evidence that prolonged intense exercise is associated with negative impacts on immune functionality.

Concentration of plasma glutamine is also decreased in athletes after prolonged exhaustive exercise or high intensity training sessions. In usual conditions, muscles are capable to release enough glutamine to sustain normal blood concentration. Under intensive conditions, however, the need for glutamine is likely to increase.

This is caused by the increased activity of the immune system, cell proliferation and repair processes which use glutamine as a fuel. Therefore, supplementation with extra L–Glutamine appears important. Moreover, it has been shown that glutamine consumption after prolonged exercise will decrease the incidence of infections. Studies have shown that the ratio of T–helper/T–suppressor cells would increase in those who received Glutamine, compared to the placebo group.
